I am going to go out on a limb here and say that the tacos at Garrido’s (360 Nueces St.) may just be the best I’ve ever had. Maybe it’s because they are so much more than your basic tacos–Chef David Garrido’s gourmet twist on this Austin staple will quickly put his new* restaurant on the map (*prior to opening Garrido’s, David worked as head chef at Jeffrey’s, widely regarded as one of Austin’s best fine-dining establishments) .

While there are only three pizzas listed on their dinner menu, each sounds delicious. They are all vegetarian, but each has it’s own unique protein add-on option to help you mix it up a little. At full price, they seem pretty reasonable at $9-$13, so you’re looking at roughly $4.50-$6.50 with a 50% discount–not bad!
Growing up in Texas with a very Southern family, there was no shortage of deep-fried, cheese-covered, heavily-sauced fare during my childhood. Even now, the smell of fried chicken can cause a powerful case of hunger no matter the time of day. So, when I first heard about Max’s Wine Dive, the combination of wine and comfort food appealed to me. Yeah, sure, the restaurant is based out of Houston. But I love wine and the aforementioned comfort food, so I figured I’d give it a shot.
There is a new pizza joint in my neighborhood. Well, I shouldn’t say “new.” It’s been open for a few months now and I finally got around to trying it last night. It’s called House Pizzeria and it’s awesome.
The restaurant is located on Airport Boulevard, just past 51st Street. First, I want to make note of how charming the space is.
Aside from being completely adorable, Jo’s Downtown is the kind of place you want to ride your cruiser bike to, park yourself outside and linger awhile. Don’t get too comfy though; they’ll kick you out at the wee hour of 9:00 when they close the doors for the night. So plan your visit accordingly because despite it’s early bedtime, it’s not to miss.
The only reason I don’t ‘have a problem’ with coffee is because all the alcohol I consume seems to balance everything out. Working as a barista in college (why isn’t there a masculine conjugation for that?), I developed a serious caffeine addiction and incredibly high-standards when it comes to beans and the preparation of said beans. This is where the fine folks at Cafe Medici come in.
Well, I was hoping to commence my EatDrinkAustin.com fun with a post on House Pizzeria, but they’re closed on Mondays. Maybe another time. So, my partner in culinary crime, Drummond, and I decided to go try The Frisco Shop instead. We haven’t been here since they opened the new location a little less than a year ago. First, let’s start off with some history.
I would venture to say that FoodHeads Cafe & Catering (616 W. 34th St.) is the best sandwich place in Austin. Now, I know there are lots of great sandwiches to be had all across this wonderful city, but FoodHeads stands out because sandwiches are all they do–and man, do they do them well. Like, mind-blowingly well.
